According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, companies
invested $1.7 trillion in technology between 1996-2000 --
nearly double the amount spent in the previous five years.
The result, according to
Business Week, is "technology buying
has outpaced the process of putting it to good use".
This situation is similar to what happened in 1985. Then, five years of runaway investments in PC technologies failed to generate productivity gains. It wasn't until the early 1990s, after thousands of companies had worked through the complexities of local-area networks and e-mail, that the payback for the PC investments came. We are now going through a similar excess investment in the Internet technologies and fiber-optic network infrastructure. These investments will result in increased efficiencies. Achieving the gains, however, is no longer a matter of technology expertise. Business operations are dependent on processes. Information dissemination is essential for process functioning. Networks enable distribution of information. The next level of business improvements must come from the enhancement of business processes by leveraging the network infrastructure. Founded in 1991, Silicom has unique expertise, methodologies, and capabilities for the application of networking to business level issues. Using our proprietary methodologies, we integrate business processes with network technology elements to generate operational efficiencies resulting in bottom-line gains.
